The primary country was that of Firewood, a country ruled by a family who mastered the powers of the nine crystals. Since the nine crystals have the ability to ward off evil the people of the country of Firewood believed they were safe. Death Adder was forced to stay away from Firewood by the crystals so he conquered Nendoria and Altorulia instead. Though he still longed for the day that he could rule Firewood...and that day eventually came.
Firewood's king was betrayed by one of his high-ranking ministers who sold the crystals to Death Adder. Not longer after that Firewood was burned to the ground as Death Adder and his monsters destroyed everything in their path, murdering many people. Soon the whole world will most likely fall to Death Adder unless someone will take a stand and challenge his power. That someone will be you, a young warrior whose parents were killed by Death Adder. Seeking revenge you set off on a quest to save the world by defeating Death Adder and regaining possession of the nine crystals.
Golden Axe Warrior is set up similar to the game The Legend of Zelda. From a side view players move from screen to screen while fighting monsters, exploring dungeons, and visiting towns. At towns players can purchase items such as swords, shields, armor, or magic. Money comes in the form of horns which can be gained by slaying monsters. Finding horns or other items is the only thing gained by slaying monsters. Experience is not gained, instead the character's base health is increased at particular points in the game.
