Final Fantasy XVI on the PS5 takes place in Valisthea, a dark and medieval world divided by warring nations that rely on enormous, magical Mothercrystals. These crystals, revered by societies, are slowly draining and contributing to a spreading Blight, a condition that threatens all life. Unique to Valisthea are powerful, god-like beings called Eikons, each tied to an elemental Force, such as Phoenix, Shiva, and Ifrit. These Eikons are controlled by chosen humans, called Dominants, who play a significant role in the politics and conflicts across nations.

Players follow Clive Rosfield, a warrior whose journey is marked by loss, revenge, and a quest to uncover his connection to Ifrit, an Eikon of fire. With intense real-time combat and a narrative that explores power, sacrifice, and fate, Final Fantasy XVI offers a more mature tone and gritty aesthetic than previous installments. The game combines fast-paced action, cinematic storytelling, and a complex world that examines the cost of wielding great power within a fractured land.
